A BROKEN thermometer could threaten your health for months, according to Anthony Carpi of the City University of New York. Carpi and his colleagues found 11 out of the 12 houses they sampled in New York had higher levels of mercury than the background level. Broken thermometers and fluorescent light tubes are the probable source (Environmental Science & Technology, vol 35, p 4170).
